G.R.Singleton suggested using kerning, which I have played with in the past. I really like it, but I always forget to turn it on.

1. Is there a way to turn it on by default?

No and there is an issue but I do not know its number.

2. If the answer to 1. is no, then is there a way to turn on kerning so that it will always be on in a particular style? I do most of my writing using a default template, so having kerning as part that style would work for me.

Quick answer is use the method outlined in Help > Contents > Index >
Search term > kerning;setting Strange place for the setting but it does
work providing you have at least 2.0.1.

Hi G.R.S.,

I have 2.0.1 but I can't find any setting for kerning in the Languages section. The help files under Kerning>Setting direct me to Tools>Options>Language Settings>Asian Layout. I have no Asian Layout under Language Settings, only Languages and Writing Aids. On the Languages tab there are a couple of options for turning on Enhanced Language Support but neither of these brings up any choices for anything to do with kerning. Like I said I have 2.0.1 but it is 680m1 (Build 8990). Are you perhaps working with a more recent nightly build?
