Thank you for your help so far.
Your instructions will allow me to place a page number in the center of
the long edge, but they will not allow me to do so along the short edge
of the page in the center. Is this a hopeless cause?
I've been playing with this and here's something that will work.
1. Set your page format to Landscape. Turn *off* headers and footers.
2. Find the Frame Style in the Stylist. Modify the default frame style
(or create a new one) to position it appropriately. You will probably
need to play around with this part.
3. Insert a text frame. Specify the position as Left and Middle
(vertically).
3. Click outside the frame and then once again inside it so that you can
add text. Insert the page number field.
4. Go into the Stylist and find the paragraph style "Frame contents".
Right click, Modify.
5. Find the Position tab. In the middle of the dialog -- set the
Rotation to 270 degrees.
6. When you get the first one positioned the way you like it, simply
make sure that the whole thing is selected (borders are highlighted with
little boxes in the corners) and Edit -> Copy.
7. On every page of your Landscape table, just click on the page
somewhere and press Cntl-V. This will insert a copy of that original
frame, complete with page number field, in the same physical location on
the page.
8. Done.
A bit more tedious than it possibly could be, but it can be done.
