OpenOffice.org is entirely separate from MS Office and does not affect
any MS Office program or any other application program in any way.
OpenOffice.org can happily co-exist on the same machine with any MS
Office programs with no conflict whatsoever.
The only overlap has to do with whether you want files with MS Office
suffixes like .DOC, .XLS and .PPT to open in MS Office when you
double-click on their icons or to open in OpenOffice.org when you
double-click on their icons. You will be asked whether you wish to
associate these files with OpenOffice.org when you install. If you
choose to associate them at that time, then double-clicking will open
them in OpenOffice.org instead of the MS Office program they are
currently associated with.
Whether you choose to associate these file with OpenOffice or leave them
associated with MS Office, such files can still always be opened within
either MS Office or OpenOffice.org via normal file opening menu items,
toolbar icons, and shortcuts both within OpenOffice and within
corresponding MS Office programs. Or they can be opened by
right-clicking on the file and selecting "Open with ..." from the menu
to select which program you wish to use.
If you at any time want to change the program that opens a file
according to its suffix when its icon is double-clicked, within Windows
Explorer right click on a file with that suffix and select "Open with
...". From the list of programs select either "OpenOffice.org 2.0" or
the appropriate MS Office program and click on the box labeled "Always
use the selected program to open this kind of file". You can change
back and forth as much as you wish.
