Is the Portable version of OpenOffice not really OpenOffice? Everyone on the list acts like it does not exist when I can see barely any difference in its basic functioning. It is just a smaller - more portable version.
As for the cost of hard drives.. We deal in used laptops. We also work with getting used computers to the poor and to parents of poor school aged children. Sometimes the older computers and laptops come with very small hard drives. I know people who put everything they have into just getting a computer to use and cannot afford to replace anything - even if it is broken. So the thought that some of these people could afford a new hard drive simply for the extra space is not feasible. Maybe I am wrong but I offer the portable version of OpenOffice as a viable alternative. I have installed the portable version with no problems on many computers. A thumb drive can cost as low as $7.99 - $9.99 for a 256mg drive. I have given copies of it to parents with school children so their children can work on their school work anywhere. The children carry a version of OOo with them and can work on their MSOffice based homework on just about any computer they come into contact with. Their grandparents and all of their friends do not have to have anything special installed for them to do homework. So far I have had no complaints. None of them are power-users, but it is still a functional program. As for being on dial-up. I am on dial-up. On old phone lines with at most have a 28.8bps connection. I have a download manager (flash-get and FireFox) and I have successfully downloaded every version of OpenOffice so far. I will admin - the first version of OOo took a long time but it worked. The portable version is so small, it takes hardly any time at all compared to the larger versions. If you live in KY and would like to donate a computer to our effort, please contact me offline. Just an idea. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
