I have done this several times using a line so bad it won't go faster than 28.8K. The trick is to use a download manager (E.g. Aria for Firefox or wget, etc) These programs (and many others) are designed to be able to resume a download where it stopped when the line gets disconnected or you had to stop to use the phone for something else.

They are really great. The only one I wouldn't use is Wellget. It's great for smaller files, but seems to die on really big ones like OOo.

Download managers should be available for any platform you are using (Windows, Mac, Linux ....)
