This newsgroup generally strips attachments, as it did in this case, at
least as I received your post.
However, merely guessing, your problem might be the extension on your file.
If it is a genuine Excel-format file, it should have the suffix .xls and
should then properly open in Calc. If it is instead in some kind of txt
format and has an extension such as .TXT which indicates a text format,
then it will open in Writer.
To force a text file to be opened in Calc, create a new spreadsheet and
use Insert -> Sheet from file... Or change. the extension of the file
to .csv.
