Andy,
You can try before you move the program to hard disk. I agree that it
is far better to move the program to the hard disk to run regularly.
The disk image is functional and for those programs that have an
installer, it saves having to move the unpacked installer to the hard
disk to add clutter to the drive by having the compressed download, and
the installer and the installed program on the disk at the end
only to have to delete the installer as well. For programs that do not
have an installer, but are instead unpacked onto the image a mere
drag and drop will put them where the user wants them and the image can
be 'ejected'.
The dmg is a rather nice solution to several scenarios. Coupled with
the standard Apple installer it provides a fairly standardized way of
operating to the user who is installing new programs.

For 2.0 there is no installer, if you double click the icon from the
disk image it will launch X11 and then the application. My thought
was that there was a potential issue running from the disk image, even
with the file moved to the desktop as that does not copy the package
(NVU for example, will not run from a disk image). If a user is going
to run use the application anyway, It makes much more sense to have an
installed version, rather than using a disk image on a regular basis.
If you create a document, save it and then unmount your disk image,
the finder will not mount the image and open the app for you.
