Chris
I had the same question. And I got the same answer that I needed the reader but it still was not working for me. Every time I tried to open one of these documents it would say "Done" and have a blank screen. So, someone told me that if I save the file to my desktop then open it from there you can read the pdf document. Hope this helps

Subject: [users] Opening Adobe pdf

I have recently begun using OpenOffice. I do like the program but I am having difficulty opening .pdf files. Is OpenOffice not compatible with Adobe Acrobat? I use Acrobat Reader 5.0 and instead of getting text from an e-mail download, I only get machine language.

 Can you help me, please?
 Thanks in advance
