As far as I have ever experienced, OpenOffice will simply not read PDF
files. When it says done, it just means that it tried, not that it was
successful. You can try to open any file you wish, but unless it is one
that OpenOffice is capable of opening, nothing will happen.

If for some reason you cannot open PDF documents with Adobe, either the
document is damaged or Adobe Reader is damaged. I have a small program
called FoxIt reader that will sometimes open documents that Adobe calls
damaged.

The main reason behind PDF files is that they are generally un-editable.
Without buying the full Adobe program, there is not much of a way to
make a PDF editable. There are limited ways to extract information from
PDF files, but full ability to edit is - most of the time - is
impossible. Even with the Full Adobe, which I have, unless you are the
original document creator, editing is still a pain in the rear.

OpenOffice cannot change this at the moment.

Many people use PDFs to distribute "paid for" documents. Books and
such. The ability to open any PDF on hand and edit would damage the
publishing industry...or at least upset a few people.

Chris
I had the same question. And I got the same answer that I needed the
reader
but it still was not working for me. Every time I tried to open one of
these documents it would say "Done" and have a blank screen. So,
someone
told me that if I save the file to my desktop then open it from there
you
can read the pdf document. Hope this helps
