Hi Tony,
I don't have much experience with the spreadsheet module of OpenOffice,
but I know that under "Save As" your brother could save his .sxc files
in a wide range of different formats, including xls, although there may
be compatibility issues, depending on the complexity of the spreadsheets.
The other route, of course, would be for you to download and install
OpenOffice, which after all, is free of charge!

Note that it would appear that your brother may not be using the latest
version of OpenOffice - it seems sxc was the spreadsheet extension in
OOo1 - the new OOo2 extension name appears to be ods.
