Something similar happened to me some time ago with Suse, and I never got to the bottom of it. The only way I managed to sort it out was to remove ALL of the OOo associated packages provided by the distro, to remove all the OOo-associated user directories (i.e. for both the early and later versions) and then to install the downloaded version again.
