If Open Office would like to endear itself to old Lotus users, may I
suggest the following? If you type in a cell "1+2" (without the quotes)
then OO Calc should assume that you are typing in a formula, and NOT, as
Excel does, and which drives me MAD, assume that if it is not prefixed
by = or + that it is TEXT? When you write a sum on a piece of paper you
don't write "+1+2" do you? You just write "1+2".

I agree that the old Lotus way was better and more intuitive. Most of us gave
up with them a long time ago. Even QuatroPro is just a niche player. Most new
user of OO.o wil have experianced Excel, at some point. Users of OO.o are
already used to doing it the way its now done. Change is a demon, and will
cause more problems than its worth.
I would have to agree that "Change is a demon", but it should not cause any problems if there is simply an option to select. Something to the affect of ' "=" not required for formula '
