you may not have a clear idea of where you want to go or what you

Then use a template that has a number of styles that one has already
created, in it. [My default OOo writer template contains 25 page
styles, and 2 000 paragraph styles. I've lost count of the number of
character and numbering styles it has. My defautl calc template has 2
000 cell styles.]
Takes a minute or two to load up I bet. :)
But really, the only reason you have that many styles defined is that
you do a lot of linguistic work. So you probably have a hundred styles
that are exactly the same save for the language setting. In truth you
would be better served if the language setting were somehow separated
from the visual formatting.
Depending on the situation, styles may be a help or a hindrance.
I've had it go both ways.
If one consistently uses the same styles, then changing the
appearance is trivial. Also note that the search/replace function in
OOo can replace paragraph styles.
That is useful. Thanks for reminding me of that facility.
with a haphazard mixture of intentional styles, automatic styles,
and direct formatting.
And the easiest/fastest way to clean up mess like that, is to save
as plain text, then open the plain text file, and apply the
formatting using styles.
Well, yeah... assuming you aren't talking about one messed up paragraph
in the middle of a 500 page document. Most folks have better things to
do with their time.
That's all very true; *assuming* that you have the luxury of
originating the document from a blank sheet of paper.
I've reformatted umpteen documents that I have received from other
sources/people. The only "assumption" I had to make, was that the
person who gave me the document, would not notice the reformatting I
did.
If they don't notice then they can't appreciate your work. So I have to
ask... what's the point? Does it accomplish anything besides making you
feel warm and fuzzy about having a properly styled document? Sounds like
a waste of time to me.
