Hi Rod,
I'm not really following this debate, but noticed something in your post
that I wanted to comment on. Relative styles ARE possible in
OpenOffice... they're just not intuitive. At all! Give me a yell if
you're wanting/trying to set them up.

I'm curious at least. Can you set up a character style that will, for
instance, apply italic formatting, over the top of a section of text
that is composed of mixed fonts or point sizes without changing the
underlying fonts or sizes? I know about hierarchal styles if that's what
you're referring to.
My understanding is that the format of a single character is determined by:
1. The font settings of the underlying paragraph style.
2. Possibly modified by exactly one character style.
3. Possibly modified by the direct formatting in a non-structured manner.
What I would love is a character style that only specifies italic so
that when applied to TNR 12 point results in italic TNR 12-point, and
when applied to Arial Bold 10-point results in italic Arial Bold
10-point, etc.
