I'm not going to claim that Wordperfect is better (or worse) than Writer, or that code tokens are better (or worse) than object styles. But Wordperfect is a mature product with a loyal following for a reason. I think that WP's implementation of tokens and reveal code is more mature and fully developed than Writer's or Word's implementation of object styles. I think that Writer's object styles are more predictable and less prone to human error. There's no intrinsic reason why object styles can't be made just as robust and flexible as tokens, but it is going to take some serious rethinking of the implementation.

I don't think that tokens need to be implemented after looking at the content.xml file. There are pointers for each and every formatting change that occurs within a document. They are not tokens but pointers to the style or direct formatting that is taking place.

A method of seeing these points within the document, similar to "View Non-printable characters" and a dialog box with the style and any direct formatting displayed would be a great help. It doesn't change the styles and object basis of OOo which many defend.

It would supply a tool to provide assistance to those that prefer RC over styles or to allow those (like me) that don't have the option of reformatting documents to my liking.

Using the "Styles and Formatting" window with "Applied Styles" is the first step. If I could dock it at the bottom or top of my screen would be the second and then expand from there. No changes to OOo are really required. Doing this would make OOo a much better tool and appeal to a much wider user base.

As many have said, Styles can be overridden by direct formatting. This direct formatting is the domain of Reveal codes ability to show very quickly where formatting changes occur.

Just for reference, here is an example of a test document where the font changes normal to italic underlined.
---
<style:style style:name="T3" style:family="text"><style:text-properties fo:font-style="italic" style:text-underline-style="solid" style:text-underline-width="auto" style:text-underline-color="font-color" style:font-style-asian="italic" style:font-style-complex="italic"/>
---

This is how the text is marked in the document.
---
<text:span text:style-name="T3">another </text:span>

Lets make OOo better by providing better tools.
