I think one of the greatest points of OpenOffice 1.x was the file auto
restore function. I was pleasantly surprised when, after a crash, I was
able to restore the file I was working on, even to having the cursor
placed where I was when it crashed! This was an outstanding feature
which, to my knowledge, no other word processor had or has.
Now that I have been working with OpenOffice 2.x, I have discovered that
this feature does not work as well. After a couple of crashes which
destroyed my work, I discovered that the auto-save option must be
enabled for the file recovery to function. OpenOffice 1.x did not have
this requirement. I, personally, do not like the auto save function.
There are many times I had written myself into a corner and the fastest
way out was to close and reopen the file. With auto save enabled, this
is not feasible. So, I am torn between two preferences which are
exclusive of each other.
I, for one, would like to see the OpenOffice 1.x file recovery feature
restored in future releases, as it was implemented in 1.x.
Other than that, I continue to use OpenOffice 2.x and believe it is one
of the best office suites I have ever used. Keep up the good work.
