I find open office to be an excellent program and use its draw portion
exclusively.
One thing that would bring open source software more into general usage
is something like Outlook.
It is arguably, the most frequently used program on a desktop when it is
available.
However, rather than try to create a monolithic unit which has a large
memory footprint, something that would be as useful if not more useful
is a "shell" which consolidates different elements of outlook but does
not do anything except hold them together and facilitate communications
between them if necessary. Therefore, a person could use Thunderbird,
foxfire, and open office interoperatively and additional items such as
calendars and task pads could be created separately.
This would allow open source afficionados to tackle the "office
organizer" tasks one at a time rather than trying to replace Outlook in
totality. It would also allow for significantly improved concepts to be
applied. For example, a multi-participant project program could be
integrated automatically with the task module if desired.
Since we now have so much more experience with office type products we
now have a better base to actually improve what outlook was meant to be.
I propose the name "Shell" for the concept. I suggest that it be
patented and then patent usage be made open to the Open-Source
community. This would keep microsoft from copying it.
