There's a big difference between WRITING a novel in OOo and LAYOUTING a novel in OOo. The original poster asked about the latter. You can write a novel in any software you please--notepad.exe if you insist. Someone is then going to have to layout your stuff for printing.
I'm not sure how well suited OOo is for the task of desktop publishing.
