     They are just two different programs as you well put it. However, 
there is one step in the installation of OpenOffice.org (OOo) that you 
need to be careful about. In the step when is asks you if you want to open 
your MS Office files using OOo, leave all of those checkboxes blank. This 
step is asking you if you want OOo to open your MS Office files anytime 
you double click one of them in Windows Explorer. You probably want MS 
Office to open these files when you double click them. OOo will open MS 
Office files for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint using File > Open and 
selecting the file without any real difficulty. (This is all about file 
associations if you know what these things are.)
