File -> Save As and select the document type your correspondents can read  - 
probably Microsoft Word 97/2000/Xp (.doc) Then send that file to them.

I'm not a Windows user, but if you want to change the file associations, then 
I think you can right click on a file, select Open With and then choose the 
application you want to use for that file; also tick the box indicating you 
want all files of that type to open with that application.
