Yes it's compatible, and for a new mac user I would suggest that you
take a look at neooffice.org -- and if your friend just purchased a
Mac they got an eval version program called "pages" which is a
pretty good mac word processor, very (very) osx interface, but if
they get into the whole "i" thing it is pretty cool.
