I have been using OpenOffice.org for about a year now, and really like

Open Office compatabile with ver. 6? Do I need to be doing any

If so, how do I do them?

Yes OOo can open and save Word 6 files. The current version of OOo is
2.0.2 (2.0.3 to be released shortly). If the document does not contain
any sensitive or private information, please fell free to email a copy
to me off-list (the list server removes attachments) and if I can open
it I will send it back in odf, sxw or any other format you wish.

Hope this helps.

For what it's worth, I've encountered s similar problem with two specific Word files. When I try to open them up in OOo, they do not open and the computer freezes. A co-worker who has Word printed one out to show me. It is around 12 pages with a fair number of graphics. This file size is around 3.5 MB. So it's not a trivial document, but it's also one that OOo SHOULD be able to handle. Any suggestions would be appreciated. The document is not confidential, if anyone would like to take a look at it.

Dick:

You should open a issue and attach the file so that the developers can look at it and tweak the import filter. That would be the most helpful thing.
