[users] How do you turn off the following settings?

1. OpenOffice tends to get into this "group mode" where it tries to put 
everything in a group. That is, the background of the text and lines 
becomes ghosted and I have right click and select "Exit group". Is there 
any way to turn this off?
2. In my document, when I select the rectangle tool and expand a 
rectangle, it is always choosing a square. If I hold down the shift key, 
it allows me to create rectangles. How do I get it to stop this?
