If you are meaning what you see in this file:
http://www.delewis.com/OOo/sample.odt, then the answer is yes. What I
did
was to create the text, open the Drawing Toolbar, and put a rectangle
around the words. I right click the rectangle and selected Area from the
context menu. Then I selected No Fill and clicked OK. I again right
clicked the rectangle and selected Line from the context menu. I
increased
the width of the line from 0.00 to 0.05 and clicked OK.

mmm... nice try! :-)
It is what I wanted in terms of net result, but not what I would like to
have. I consider this to be a workaround that may be useful once you
finish
editing the text. If I move the text around or if the boxed text spans
over
several lines I do not want to have to adjust the shape/position of
the box
polygon.
Actually what I would like is a new tab in the character style where I
can
define custom borders as a character attribute.
Another way to do this might be to put your word or text in a frame and
anchor the frame "as character", so that it moves in context. Then you
can set the frame border and other frame atributes as you like. Not
quite the same though, as the text base line will need to be set
manually I think.
