I suggest that you put word(s) in a frame and anchor the frame to
character. See

Tried that too, it is just too cumbersome to align the text baseline, and
again it doesn't work if the boxed text spans, say, one and 1/2 line.

Again, the best mechanism would be to be able to define border properties
for the characther.
