The problem was altogether my fault. I forgot that I had switched
users. I was trying to uninstall OO without administrative rights. As
soon as I switched back, I had no problem.
I was disappointed in the performance of OO Writer. MS Word is really
easy to tame now. All the default settings can be dumped in a few
minutes and there are plenty of options for setting up templates for
anything. MS Office seems a bit pricey, but really is not when you
consider what all it will do.
If I might make a suggestion, instead of trying to catch up with
Microsoft, go in the other direction and work on programmes that have
solid basic utility. I really only need all the things Word will do
about ten percent of the time. Now, when I need Word's abilities, I
really need them, but for ordinary writing I could use a basic word
processor without all the extras. In the 80's I used PFS Pro Write, and
it was a good, simple programme. It was also a good programme to teach
youngsters the basics of word processing without any complications.
Audacity is a good open source audio editor. I have both Audacity and
Sound Forge, with Acid, on my machine. I use Sound Forge to do the
really fancy stuff. I use Audacity to do basic editing, like radio news
inserts.
I like lite, as long as the job gets done. I switch to heavy duty when
needed.
I'm sorry your programme was not what I needed.
