There are at least three options:
1. If the recipients have MS Word and MS Excel, then you can save the
file (File > Save As) in a Word or Excel format.
2. If the recipients do not need to edit the file but just need to view
it or print it, then you can export it as a PDF file. As long as they
have a PDF reader such as the free Adobe Acrobat reader, they can read
the files then.
3. They can install OpenOffice.org.
