Thank you so much for your reply. This is getting stranger by the
minute ... at least to me. Perhaps the answer lies here somewhere.
It does not matter whether Quickstart is running or not.
If Calc is open and I File/Open any text document (.odt or .doc ....)
Writer open quickly and flawlessly.
If I start Writer ... and wait until it locks up, THEN start Calc; Calc
will open perfectly and then Writer will finish opening!!
If I open Calc - then close it Writer will then open perfectly
Something here has had some effect though. Writer did open properly a
few times without loading Calc first... but it is now back to it's old
tricks after a few restarts.

What happens if you open, say, Calc first, and while it is open, do
File|New|Text Document from Calc?
Does the problem seem to depend on whether Quickstarter is running or not?
