John, From your description and headers you are using some version of Windows. This info and the version of OOo would help immensely in being able to offer some concrete assistance. However, I will take a stab. I think you should *VERY* carefully check your hardisk for bad spots. The problem you have described appears to me to be exactly this type of problem. In other words, you try writing out the file, hit a bad spot and OOo has problems. Later, you try again and it works. You might also try enabling Tools > Options > Load/Save > Always create backup copy and Save AutoRecovery information every and select a reasonable time frame for your way of working.
