In my experience, every email client Fs up badly every do often, and
damages things. Outlook Express certainly does. I've heard horror
stories of Outlook doing it. And yes, Thunderbird does it too. That's
one of the main reasons why I use IMAP. All your email gets stored on
the IMAP server, and you use Thunderbird to connect and download
messages as you view them. When things go sour, you delete your profile,
create a new one, and all your email is still there. This is but one
argument for using IMAP.
