From looking at it briefly I think this is an analogous case to notes
between MSO and OOo. In MSO the notes show up on the screen (kind of a
handy feature especially in tracking changes) but they only appear as
yellow boxes in OOo. I think the same is true for index entries. You can
hold you cursor over the entry and wait a second and you will get
information about the entry but I don't think you can make it display on
screen by default.
I previously posted an RFE for this feature in Calc, and now I have
posted one for Writer at
<http://qa.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=66759>. Vote if you
like it.

Hello,
In MS Word you can mark word(s) as index entries. If you view the resulting text with hidden text displayed, you see these entries roughly as follows :
My example{XE "example" }.
In OOo Writer the best I can do is display the text which has been selected for an index
entry as a field (gray background) or, in the case of a Word doc opened in Writer, as a
gray vertical bar which indicates a field. Can Writer display the text of the index
entries "inline"?
Thanks for reading this far.:)
