This is not true, GIMP can import vector images, the preferred format for this being SVG: it not only import and rasterize the images but can also preserve the paths for further editing.


On the Linux side, there are many programs that can work with vector graphics. Inkscape, koffice-karbon, skencil and xfig just to name a few.

One program that I used last week that was interesting was autotrace that converted a raster image to vector. It was only a line drawing but it was handy for converting an image into a file for use in autocad.
