     When saving a document the first time in the .odt format, the Save As 
window opens. Near the bottom of that window is a checkbox labeled "Automatic 
file name extension". That needs to be checked if you want the .odt suffix on 
your file. When checked, naming a file Sample and saving produces the file 
name Sample.odt. If not checked, the file name remains Sample and has no 
suffix.
