OpenOffice.org (OOo) is an office suite as you know. There is complete
privacy. I have used this office suite for several years without any of the
problems happening that concern you. During that time, I have downloaded and
installed several versions of OOo. There is no fee charged for downloading
and installing OOo. As part of the download process, you are given the
opportunity to contribute to OOo, but this is strictly voluntary.
OOo has a spreadsheet section (Calc) as well as a text document section
(Writer). I use Writer almost everyday writing HTML documents that I then
send out as email. (Writer can open the default email client and add document
as an attachment.) One warning: any documents you send out as part of any
email should first be saved in a format that the receiver can read (.doc
or .rtf for example).
Another difference between OOo and MS Office: you can install a copy of
OOo on as many computers as you desire because its license allows you to do
so.
