Sarah,

I don't think Microsoft Works documents are readable by Open Office, Might I suggest re installing Works, and seeing if you can save your existing documents as .rtf files. They at least should be readable by Open Office.

You should think of Open Office, as a free version of Microsoft Office, as it is able to read and write documents created in MS Office. Most
files created in Word, Excel, and Power point will be readable.

As to other packages, word processors, if you have the option to save as .txt .rtf or .doc, they should be readable in either Open Office or MS Office.

The difference being Open Office is totally free, and depending on your status MS Office can range from free (beta tester) to moderate expense (student license) to hundreds of pounds or dollars for ordinary off the shelf customers.

PS this list is a Users List, it is not necessarily read by any of the developers of Open Office.

I was using Microsoft Works 7 but it was too slow so I just downloaded Open
Office (Works has been removed, all my docs initially defaulted to WordPad.
When I try to open anything from My Docs (all my documents now sport the Open
Office picture) I get a box pops up saying 'Filter Selection' with a list of
programme names - I do not know which to choose and the ones most likely give
me a little box saying 'General error. General input/output error'
If I right click my document and ask it to 'Open with...' then click Open
Office, I get the same little error box
If i double click the document from inside My Documents folder, I get the same
Filter Selection option and error message
If I open Open Office, then try importing my documents with 'Open', some
display and and some give the 'Filter Selection' option before error messaging
again.
I was told Open Office was the answer to all my problems, but am worried that,
if I can't use it to get to current documents, I will have to uninstall and go
back to Works (which I really would prefer not to do).
Any help you can give me will be much appreciated. Thank you
Sarah Neville
