Dear Dan I think I have solved the problem with your help. When you said "Did you save from a CD" although this was not the case it jogged my memory and I recall I opened the spreadsheet from a MS Works Spreadsheet in order to utilise some of the data already entered on it. I have since opened a completely fresh spreadsheet in org 1.1.1 and find that the 'sort' facilitiy is no longer in shaddow! I am now able to sort alphabetically once more!!
