Sorry I'm coming late to this thread.
I have three simple columns ABC. When I click any cell in column A and
hit the sort button, all three columns are sorted with A as the
reference. However when I click on any cell in, say, column C then all
three are again sorted but with A as reference not C. Is this
intentional? it is not helpful.

Just to clarify however, in the latest version of OOo, multiple cells
do not have to be selected. If only a single cell is selected, then
OOo assumes that you want to sort on that column.
