It's true what Arnold wrote, only until you delete the named cell. After deleting: the name is not deleted and is transfered to the adjacent cell (left or up, depending on how the cells were deleted); '=old' formula gives '#REF' error; double-clicking the name in Navigator gives "Invalid range" message; the name 'old' cannot be given to another cell. After I delete the name (Insert->Names->Define) and create it again, '=old' formula gives the expected result. Maybe that's your case?
