If I remember correctly, the dictionaries changed between releases and may or may not be compatible. I suggest you first try using File > Wizard > Install new dictionaries to get the latest German ones. On the off chance that this is insufficient, try downloading the German language pack. This pack may be available from http://de.openoffice.org/ so check there first.
