I know that you have used the download to upgrade but I suggest you have a look at http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=55920 and see if this is what is impacting you. If yes, then Install the language pack from http://oootranslation.services.openoffice.org/pub/OpenOffice.org/ or try File > Wizards > Install new dictionaries -- PLEASE KEEP MESSAGES ON THE LIST.
