I am in awe of the number of people who have taken time to respond. Thank you all very much. Joe's solution was beautifully straightforward and clear and it solves my problem. At some point I think I'll have to take the advice of other posters and link the spreadsheet to Base, but I'm not looking forward to finding the specific information that explains how to do it.
