AFAIK, you can import Excel files into Calc and you can save Calc files in Excel format. What does not work, is using macros, because Excel and Calc use different languages. What I've read from your quotes, I would say, that an existing Excel macro will still exist after you imported the file and have changed/saved it. Does this help you?
