Thank you for your suggestion -- since my system said I already had a newer version installed, I had to actually get rid of that first (see my reply to grsingleton). What the Apple support page you referenced was really talking about was installing stuff that wasn't installed originally. I'm not sure why I had a newer version of X11 installed - the only thing I can think of is that I installed it originally, then one of the software updates that I downloaded added something new and improved to it that turned out to conflict with OOo.

I hope you enjoy your Mac - I love the Mac OS. Yes, it's a great user experience right out of the box, but it can also be much more. When I upgrade to a new version, I usually get two books: a basic one and an advanced one. There are some good security tweaks that are easy to do if you know about them (for example, the OS ships with the firewall turned off by default, since it interferes with some networks, and one of the first things I do is to turn it on - no conflicts with my ISP or home network), there are some cool things you can do to make life even easier than it already is, and it's handy to have an in- depth reference around in case some application starts acting up.

In fact, one of those books led me to OOo - well worth the price!

I'm not a Mac user yet (very soon, hopefully) but check Apple support article at
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301229 which states the
following:
Want to reinstall a part of Mac OS X 10.4 after it's already installed? It's
    easy!
    1. Insert your Mac OS X 10.4 Install disc.
    2. Double-click the "Optional Installs.mpkg."
    3. After the installer opens, you can choose from the following
    custom install options:
    4. You can expand each section (except Additional Fonts) by
clicking the disclosure triangle to the left of the section name, if you
want even more specific custom install options. Once you've
selected the items, simply click OK, then click Install.

Here's a complete list of all the custom installation options available with
    Optional Installs.mpkg:
    Applications
    Address Book 4.0
    iCal 2.0
    iChat 3.0
    iTunes 4.7.1
    Mail 2.0
    Oxford Dictionaries
    Safari 2.0
    X11

I'm having the same problem. When I try to install the X11 under
options on the Tiger CD (or from downloads on the Apple site), it
says that I can' because I already have a newer version of X11 --
which must have arrived with one of the software updates
(perhaps???). Spotlight finds X11 (or its installer, but the box icon
is open) on my hard drive, but without specifying exactly *where* it
is, so that I can find it and see what I can do with it. Easy Install
(which would leave the data on my hard drive where it is) doesn't
install X11 (I'm pretty sure -- does anyone know otherwise?), so I'm
pretty sure that I would have to either "archive and install" or
"erase and install" my entire hard drive in order to custom install
the X11 from the Tiger CD. Any ideas about where Tiger is hiding it
on my hard drive? My experience with UNIX is extremely limited, but I
suspect the problem could be fixed somehow by using the Terminal, if
I knew what I was doing. Fran

The appropriate X11 is in the options on the Tiger OS DVD. Just
put the DVD in and query the options or developer files. Install
is very easy.
