FYI : I had the same problem and this is how I finally solved it : I
re-installed OS X.4 while making sure that I followed the instructions given
by another member of this user group :
Insert your system install disk, scroll down to "optional
> installs", click to open, click to continue, agree, continue, until
> you come to a list of things to install. Click on the triangle next to
> "Applications," check on "X11" and install. Of course make sure not to
> have any applications running and install from an administrator

I then went on the internet and downloaded and installed the upgrade to
bring my X.4 to X.4.4
AFTER THAT, I installed Open Office and it works
Note : Be patient because of X11, Open Office may take 20 to 25 seconds to
open...
Note : Because my e-mail is also used at work, I may unsubscribe and
re-subscribe using my Yahoo account ([EMAIL PROTECTED])
THANKS A LOT EVBRYONE (especially Fran Mennick) and have a nice day !!!

Where did you get the X11? There is a non-useful version on the
Apple site. The useful X11 is in the OS 10 install disk.
You need to load the X11 from the options for Office to run.
You might also consider Neo Office which runs under Office without
requiring the X11.
