Hi there,

I am trying to install open office 2.0 for a macbook.
I downloaded the program but X11 was not installed on
my computer. I downloaded X11 and the computer will
not let it install because it said there is newer
software already installed. Therefore I have been
unable to install open office. Do you have any ideas
how I may deal with this situation? Thanks for your
input.

Bryan,
I had the same problem last week. I'm running Mac OS X 10.4.7 on an eMac (PPC chip). I downloaded OOo, but it wouldn't open because it said I didn't have X11 installed. When I tried to install X11 (from either the Apple site or my install DVD), it said I couldn't because I already had a newer version of X11 installed. The only way I can figure that happening is that I installed X11 with my original system installation, then got all the software updates, and maybe there was something in one of the updates that affected X11.

I got some guidance from this group. You have to get rid of the X11 that you have now before you can install the version you need. I couldn't find it on my hard drive (it should be in the Utilities folder), but the "Spotlight" utility (the "Q" in the upper right-hand corner of the screen) found it. I dragged it from the Spotlight window to the trash, and "secure emptied" the trash. Then I got out my install DVD, scrolled down to "Optional Installs" and double- clicked on that. Clicked through continue, agree, continue, chose my hard drive as the disk to install onto, clicked continue, clicked on the triangle next to "Applications" and clicked on X11 at the bottom of the list, and clicked on install. (Obviously I did this from an administrator account with no other programs running. I can't remember if I re-started after installing it or not)

Then OOo worked fine. When you launch OOo, it opens X11 (the X window system is the graphical interface used by many UNIX flavors) so that it can work. If the little X11 window bothers you, just click on the yellow light and let it drop down to the Dock.

Someone else had a different experience than I did and found that the X11 download on the Apple site worked for them; it didn't work for me.

Good luck! I love OOo.
