You might consider increasing your memory, if you can, to at least 512MB.

If you system is not capable of loading everything there, some of the unused, non-critical processes are moved onto the hard drive to make room for what is needed now. In some cases, what is needed now is on the disk, so these processed are 'swapped' in to memory and then moved out to the disk when processing is complete. If you have very little memory left, this can cause a condition called thrashing where processes are swapped in, and then out and then in. This causes the system to appear very slow and unresponsive. The solution can be very expensive depending on the cost of additional memory. I suggest a better solution, minimize what your system loads on initial startup to those processes that are critical to your work and load up nothing else. If you are not connected to the Internet or can disconnect while you are working on your document, you may be able to disable virus scanning AND your firewall. Make sure that both are running when you reconnect to the Internet. This is just an example, but when I checked my WindowsXP SP2 machine using Task Manager I found a lot of processes were not essential to my work and shut them down. You should not shut down a process without first consulting a web site like BlackViper (I understand that this site is now closed but someone archived the site and made it available.) Good luck with OpenOffice.org and resolving this problem.
