I tried asking this at oooforums.org, but have had no bites yet, so
here goes:

I have created a small odb database to record visits made to
addresses by date and outcome. I have a dates lookup table and an
outcomes lookup table, and was rather proud of myself when I created
a form that rotated through my addresses allowing me to enter date
and outcome. Of course, the data I entered wasn't being stored
anywhere. This is obviously an embarrassingly rank newbie sort of
error, but I'm hoping that someone will take pity on me. Is there any
way to get the data that I select from the lookup table entered in
the appropriate data table? What I mean is this: if I select a date
from the lookup table, is there anyway to have that date entered in
the "Date" field of the "daily outcomes" table? Likewise for the
outcomes — can I select those from the outcomes lookup and have the
result entered in the outcomes field of the "daily outcomes" table?

Hi Vernon

Don't be embarrassed by your lack of knowledge. Actually what you are
asking is a reasonably advanced use of databases, in the sense that you
are wanting to use relational databases, and not just a simple stand
alone table.

I don't know the answer to your specific question, but you will be
needing to look up the relevant "help" files in OOo. (Choose the
OpenOffice.org Base" section in the drop down box at the dialog box.)

Since you are trying to access two tables in one form you will need to
create a subform in your main form.

I've looked around the documentation site
(documentation.openoffice.org) and information on base seems very
limited. I'm sure there is a suitable introduction in the user guide:

http://documentation.openoffice.org/manuals/OOo2.x/user_guide2_draft.pdf

Hope this helps to point you in the right directions

Actually, I don't think the user guide has a good Base chapter yet. It is in the works.

Tell us a little bit more bout your lookup tables? Are they seperate tables in the table section of the database? What fields are in them?

By the way, don't kid yourself, a real beginner wouldn't have gotten this far! :)
