What you want to achieve is much simpler if you create your own

to rectify errors of layout.
Thanks, Peter. So am I to understand there's no going back once a
label document has been created (e.g. to select to print an entire
sheet of labels)? Others? I notice there is a Frames style option -
might there be a way to use that for labels in my case? Finally, was
there a big change in how OOo handles labels from v.1 to v.2?
There's always a way, but I refuse to indulge in unnecessary head pain
and using frames to lay out a tabular structure fits that category.
As I said in my original post, under OOo 1.0.4 (I think that was it)
I could go back and tell OOo whether or not to print one label or a
sheet of labels, and there was a way to apply paragraph styles to a
sheet of labels without creating a table layout approach for each
type of label you have, applying the address to the layout, then
modifying the table cells with styles.
I have label templates for all the label stock I use - and a lot I don't
use: it took me half an hour to create all of them and I don't view that
as wasted time. As for printing one label; a page is the basic unit of
print, so I don't see the problem with leaving the unwanted label
positions blank and just completing the one I want. Am I missing
something in your case?
I think the approach was to choose a label template, type in the
address, then OOo would output a single page doc with the address in
the upper left cell. Then when you went to print, you had the option
to print a single label or a sheet.
See above; you can't print less than a page so your single label would
have to be the only content on the page.
Paragraph attributes applied to the single label on the document
would then be applied to each label cell. That was easy to figure out
and simple to use (I'm admittedly not a fan of the OOo stylesheet
approach because I don't use any single style frequently, and my list
of styles seems like it would get cumbersome quickly.)
It's worth persevering with styles. Ultimately they make life so much
easier. I'm sure that you do use a single style frequently, even if you
don't see it as such: how about the default before you manually apply
formatting?
The M$ approach to the same problem would be to type the address in a
.doc, then select the envelope/label tool, select Labels and label
style, choose whether or not to include a default return address,
then check the box for single label or sheet of labels. It'll let
you select WHICH lable on a sheet to print to, and it'll even grab
the address portion of a letter and do this - with remarkable
accuracy. Applying paragraph attributes wasn't easy, but... I'm no
Word/Office/M$ fan, but that approach was VERY user friendly and
speedy for certain tasks.
I have to agree, but I'm in no hurry to contribute further to the Gates
Retirement Programme:-)
