I can think of a few reasons for this, so can you provide a bit more 
information.

Which system are you using (I guess some form of Windows)?

How are you adding words to a dictionary? Is it the "Standard" dictionary, or 
to one you have defined yourself?

I don't know Windows, but if someone else could say where the private 
dictionaries are kept, then you should check that you can write to those 
files and folders. You could start by finding a file called standard.dic and 
check that (I assume the format is not dependent on the system type).
