If you can do everything you want in openoffice 1.1.3, there's no real
need to upgrade other than keeping up with the latest developements.

I use OpenOffice.org 1.1.5 since I had some issues with OpenOffice.org 1.1.3and
OpenOffice.org 1.1.4. If you have a slow computer I would recommend an
update to OpenOffice.org 1.1.5 rather than OpenOffice.org 2.0, but many
people here will disagree with that I think.
However, OpenOffice.org 1.1.5 will read OpenOffice.org 2.0 files like ODT
and ODS, but if you edit those files you have to save them as SXW or SXC (or
to any other format that you can find in the Save As dialog) and might lose
some formatting (I didn'ty lose anything when I tried it, but I didn't try
it on anything really complex on the other hand).

On
the other hand if you want to install 2.0 on your notebook then I'd
recommend that you upgrade your desktop as well. From the info you gave
it your desktop should be able to run 2.0 and you'd never have to
consider about saving files in 1.x-format. The problem with converting
could be that you create a document using 2.0 features which you lose
again on saving the file.
